Venice

About the city

Perhaps no city is as fabulous as Venice, a metropolis built upon pilings, a labyrinth poised over a lagoon. Venice has been called the drawing room of Europe, and indeed for centuries the city was a sanctuary for ideas and idealists, a crossroad of the Byzantine and Roman worlds. Today Venice is a different kind of drawing room. Wealthy visitors clamber into gondolas to gawk at the Byzantine palaces while being serenaded by accordionists and art appreciators stand on tiptoe for a glimpse of Renaissance masterpieces. No monument is as memorable as the city itself, so use the major sights only as an excuse for wandering. Venice revolves around piazza San Marco. The best feature of the mosaic-covered Basilica di San Marco is the Pala D’Oro, a glittering gold Byzantine bas-relief. The Torre dell’Orologio, left of San Marco, is a beautifully embellished clock tower. For culture vultures check the Accademia for the best of Venetian paintings. Some say that the tourist Venice is indeed Venice, but there are other Venices as well. To find them, wander away from the major sights and into the quieter outlying residential neighbourhoods, you won’t be disappointed, this maze of stone and colour exudes enchantment from every brick.

St Mark’s Basilica by night

day 0 - Tour (20:15-21:45)
• Take this unique a special after-hours opening just for our groups.
• Head inside St. Mark’s Basilica for an exclusive evening opening for our groups alone for the chance to see its shimmering gold mosaics as well as special access areas like the crypt and Pala d’ Oro.
• Admire the beauty of the iconic St. Mark’s Basilica without the daytime crowds that take so much away from the dazzling experience.
• Enjoy captivating commentary on the history of Basilica and Venice from a local expert guide.
• Our groups are small, no larger than 25 people, making your visit comfortable and allowing for easy interaction with your guide.

Our St. Mark’s Basilica Privileged Night Access tour is perfect for time-tight visitors who want to get an exclusive taste of this enigmatic as the sun goes down. On this after-hours visit to St. Mark’s, the empty basilica’s doors will be opened especially for our groups.

After marveling at the enormity of St. Mark’s Square (declared the “finest drawing room in all of Europe” by Napoleon), we’ll be granted special access to St. Mark’s Basilica, which will by this time have closed its doors to the general public for the night.

Once inside, you’ll have the chance to explore the hushed, deserted interior, allowing you direct, unobstructed and up-close views of those famous glass-and-gold mosaics as they shine in the evening light. Your guide will show you around, explaining the significance of the east-meets-west design elements, which reflect Venice’s role as a crossroads in the Mediterranean and beyond.

During your visit a custodian will also unlock special access areas that the daytime crowds make difficult to visit, such as the crypt which is said to hold the bones of St. Mark himself and the dazzling Pala d’ Oro, a gem-laden Byzantine altarpiece with over 1,900 precious stones.
